Josipek Botanical Garden La Fortuna, Alajuela, Costa Rica

USD 35

PROPERTY Description

This is Josipek Botanical Garden, was born in the year 2011 as an initiative by the owners of the same named cabins, due to that they’re main audience are high school students, costarrican families and groups of foreign visitors. The goal of this garden is to maintain a natural space of great scenic beauty that allows a learning experience in direct contact with nature, where the visitor can see first handedly different natural processes and how mankind has used and uses the biodiversity that surrounds us.

Rustic Graden: Once you enter towards the right of the trailyou can appreciate Doña Rosita’s rustic garden, named so in honor of the owner’s mother and because it reflects costarrican campesino’straditional sense to use and recycle tools and utensils that are usually at home. It’s an open garden with green areas to walk around and is surrounded by fruit trees that apart from giving shade and lending the place a cozier feel, provide good fruits that are used for the homemade drinks that are served at Josipek. It is important to point out the presence of the paila, of course the one we have here is an imitation of the traditional pailas used in trapiches.Several of these are used (three to five) in the process of “cooking” and cleaning sugar cane juice in the making of dulce orpanelathat is the base for traditional drinks and desserts.Another important element of this garden is the presence of a costarrican oxcart. This was the past’s four wheel drive pickup, it was used to move all the necessary loads to subside and trade at propertiesor homes, for example firewood, sugar cane for the trapiche, fruits for the market and most important, export coffee towards the ports.Worth mentioning that the oxcart was declared national symbol March 22, 1988. Due to the fact that it reflects the vigorous spirit of the costarrican campesino, besides that the traditional way to hand paint them allows so there’s no two alike, and so the summary of this allowed for it to be declared oral and intangible heritage of humanity by the UNSECO, which is celebrated since 2005.In this garden we’ve distributed 23 species very commonly used in Costa Rica for their foliage and attractive flowerings or edible fruits.

Labyrinth: In this botanic garden we’ve created a labyrinth, for it represents the search for mythical creatures that finally gives place to finding oneself. This is a symbol that originated in the Mediterranean area several thousands of years ago and vestiges have been found of labyrinths in almost all ancient cultures. Generally it is associated with the duality between life and death, liberty and finding oneself withheld, the underworld and salvation. Our labyrinth has been designed deceptively simple with only one entry route, a central point and only one exit route directly to the inverse of the entry one.Basically, it’s built with two species of plants: Variegated Poppies (Hibiscus rosasinensis) in the borders and yellow Ixoras (Ixora coccínea) in the center and of red ones in the internal divisions. Beside the entry and exit, Sacred Indian Trees (Polyaltha longifolia) have been planted for their magical meaning and medicinal uses. Our invitation is for you to go through our labyrinth with good humor as you feel imprisoned and look for your personal escape route.
