The Packhorse Inn Suffolk, East Anglia, England
The Packhorse Inn is a stunning new alternative to a boutique hotel in
Suffolk, just a few miles from Newmarket, the historic home of horse
racing. With award-winning food, cosy bar, private dining room and 8
stylish rooms this country Chic Retreat brings a much needed breath of
fresh air to Newmarket. The Packhorse Inn opened at the end of 2013
after total renovation and refurbishment by owner Philip Turner whose
vision and passion has turned this rural idyll into the best restaurant
with boutique hotel rooms in west Suffolk. This small, yet perfectly
formed, Chic Retreat in Suffolk, introduces a new breed of hospitality
to the race-going and shooting crowd in Newmarket and Cambridge and is
the perfect all-year-round hideaway for those looking for a boutique
hotel in Suffolk, within easy reach of London.
Newmarket Races is home to British horse racing and is just a few miles from The Packhorse Inn. The historic city of Cambridge is only 20 minutes by car and Bury St Edmunds, with is many cultural attractions and shops is only 15 minutes away. During the summer months enjoy one of the many surrounding walks and head home to enjoy a pint of Pimms in the garden of The Packhorse Inn.
Relaxed and stylish dining is what the restaurant at The Packhorse Inn is all about. Award-winning chef Chris Lee is at the helm in the kitchen where he works his magic using the freshest, local ingredients which includes meat direct from the farmer in Moulton, fresh fish from the Suffolk coast or Marrfish, game supplied from local shooting days, sometimes guests and often from Box Tree Farm in Wattisham. Seasonality is a priority for Chris and his menu always focuses on what is available each month; the March menu may include Suffolk venison pie, roast Suffolk chicken with sage & onion, or pan fried wild stone bass with carrot, with creamy coconut rice pudding with passion fruit jelly (Lulu¡¯s favourite!) as pudding. Pub favourites including char-grilled Suffolk ribeye steak & chips and Red Poll burger with Suffolk Gold or Dublin Bay scampi are always available. Prop up the bar and whilst deciding on your food order enjoy a local ale, Suffolk cider, draft lager or one of the carefully selected wines chosen to complement Chris¡¯s monthly-changing menus.
Affordable and stylish luxury is the name of the game at the 8 en-suite rooms at The Packhorse Inn: Folly, a charming room overlooking the terraced garden; it has a king-size chrome bed, antique writing desk and a rolltop bath in the bedroom with a separate loo and washbasin. Plantation is a French-inspired room painted in muted tones with white painted antique furniture, king-size bed with a large en-suite bathroom with a bath and a spacious walk-in shower. Primrose enjoys views of the 15th-century Packhorse Bridge and the village green and is our favourite room featuring an upholstered king-size bed with one of the loveliest boutique hotel bathrooms we have come across in Suffolk boasting a stone double ended bath and a spacious walk-in shower area. Last, but by no means least, Warren has high ceilings and an oversized wooden-floored bathroom and is one of the guests favourite choices. Newest additions Kennett, Lark, Ouse and Stour which are named after four of the rivers which flow nearby ¨C the rooms are all en suite and benefit from the luxury of underfloor heating. They are situated on the ground floor opening onto a terrace and are suitable for disabled access and are also designated ¡°dog friendly¡± with just a small charge for the additional cleaning required.
A delightful room which overlooks the terraced garden, Folly is decorated in a stunning blue paint with solid oak floors and scattered rugs. The room has a king size chrome bed and an antique writing desk. There is a clawed foot standalone bath in the room, plus an en-suite with toilet and wash-basin.
This French inspired room looks over the village green. The white painted antique furniture, rattan king size double bed and large decorative mirrors create a wonderfully relaxed environment. The en-suite bathroom has a bath and a spacious walk-in shower area together with an antique towel rail, toilet and wash basin.
This is a room with a view of the 15th century Packhorse Bridge and the village green. The luxury of Primrose is evident everywhere, from the upholstered king size double bed, the stone double ended bath (easily big enough for two!) to the antique wooden screen and the oversized mirror. The bathroom area has a spacious walk-in shower area together with an antique towel rail, wash basin with a separate room for the loo.
The drama of this huge room, with its tall ceiling, chandelier and cavernous oak-floored bathroom, never ceases to surprise guests. The bathroom features a stone double ended bath (easily big enough for two), a spacious walk-in shower area, antique towel rail, toilet and wash basin
