Sugarmill B&B St. James Parish, Montego Bay, Jamaica
- Bed and Breakfast
Let me tell you a little about us… We are Canadian & Jamaican owned and managed. Sugarmill B&B is located just a quick drive from the thriving city of Montego Bay. You can experience the luxury of peace and quiet and the excitement of the city at your leisure! Montego Bay, or MoBay as it is also known, boasts endless fun, sun and entertainment with sparkling nightlife! So no matter what your idea of fun entails you’re sure to be in a happy state of being, or as the locals say, "irie". Which means life is pretty great. Montego Bay is the second largest city in Jamaica, after the capital Kingston, which is 85 miles to the south. Gloucester Avenue, better known as The “Hip Strip”, is where you’ll want to head for beaches, restaurants, shopping and nightclubs. Our tour operator will gladly arrange the trip for you. Spectacular land and seascapes set the scene for any visit to Jamaica. With an average annual temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), lush terrain and dramatic coastlines, your imagination is your limit for fun and adventure. Jamaica offers a tropical climate inland, but temperatures can drop to the 50s (10°C) on the highest mountains. Northeast trade winds and mountain breezes keep the temperature pleasant along the coast. A little exploration will unveil spots of extraordinary beauty that serve as a magnet for nature lovers, hikers, divers and addicted vacationers, who return repeatedly to this magnificent Caribbean island. Our beautiful Jamaican property is managed and operated by a closeknit group of friendly, helpful, professional staff and we guarantee no request is too small or too large for us to accommodate for you! Sugarmill B&B is located on ½ acre of lush landscaping adjacent to the Ironshore Golf Course. We offer a tranquil and intimate environment for your “home away from home”. We are fully walled and gated for our guest’s security and peace of mind. We are within walking distance to several local shops where you can purchase fresh seafood right off the boat and have our chef prepare it for you! A little longer walk will take you to craft and gift shops where you can meet local artisans and purchase very unique items to take home. If you prefer to drive our licensed tour operator, Perry, will be happy to take you anywhere you would like to go for a very fair price. If golf is your sport of choice, the course is right across the street and adjacent to the B&B. There are several other courses within a 45 minute drive of the B&B if you want to give them all a try during your stay. We want your experience in Jamaica to be the best possible and we will work with you to ensure the details are all taken care of for you. Just let us know what you would like and remember, no request is too large or small... Relax during the heat of the day in comfort. The pool is unheated but generally stays between 75 - 80 degrees F (30 - 32 degrees C). The water is 3 ft in the shallow end to 7 ft in the deep end. The south of Jamaica is the most unspoiled part of this Caribbean island where the true heart of the nation still beats, relatively untouched by the tourist boom evident on the rest of the island.
Centre of the region is the breezy hill town of Mandeville, founded in 1816 and lying 2,000 feet (610m) above sea level. The genteel British colonial influence is strong here, from the village green bordered by a church and courthouse to the Manchester Club, which boasts Jamaica's oldest golf course founded in 1868.
The surrounding area, and the south coast region, has numerous natural attractions and wildlife refuges. With its natural beauty and slow pace, Jamaica's south is sought after by more discerning visitor’s intent on secluded relaxation rather than glitz and glamour.
Nestling in the sugar cane fields of St Elizabeth parish, the Appleton Rum Estate near the village of Magotty offers the chance to find out all there is to know about the production of rum. There is a small museum with equipment and artifacts from the days gone by, and a resident donkey to demonstrate how sugar cane used to be crushed by turning the teeth of a mill. The estate's vast acreage is still planted with sugar cane, and visitors are shown how it is harvested, crushed, fermented, distilled and aged in handmade oak barrels. Then blending is explained, before the bottling is demonstrated and thirsty tourists can end off their visit at the tavern to sample the estate's rums and liqueurs. Tours include a complimentary bottle of rum.
Black River Safari
Discover the beauty of the South Coast with a 11/2 hour boat tour by motor launch up Jamaica's largest navigable river and through what is Jamaica's largest wetland area, the Black River lower morass. Our basic tour takes you six miles up the river and return, during which a running commentary is given by your captain/ tour guide on both the ecology and a little history of the area. Over 100 species of birds have been recorded in the Black River morass and many are seen during your trip.
There are many more cultural, adventure and scenic tours available. We would be happy to send you our complimentary "Things to See and Do in Jamaica" booklet upon request.
Other Views :
Negril is favored also by those just wanting to get away from it all. It sports its famous seven-mile (11km) stretch of pristine beach, encircling Bloody Bay, and five miles (8km) of cliffs, where locals and visitors alike dare each other to indulge in some extreme cliff-diving, sometimes from ropes.
The coral reefs and caves along the coast make it a scuba diver’s and snorkeler's dream come true, and for active visitors there is the chance to take part in just about any water sport imaginable. Adventure seekers can venture by kayak into the mysterious Great Morass (a protected area full of palm trees, exotic birds and crocodiles).
Popular dive sites include the Throne Room near Negril, where it is possible to see corals, sponges, nurse sharks and cubera snapper; Ricky’s Reef, with brightly colored fish; and the wreck of the Kathryn.
