Leisure activies in the area There is much to do round and about the area. A small selection of attractions is listed below:

Snowmobile Safaris This trip is the most suitable for the first timer, as an initiation into the mysteries of the snowmobile. Having mastered the safety and driving instructions you will then set off on a gentle 20km cruise through the forest, stopping half way for refreshments of doughnuts and coffee in a warm tepee.

Husky Farm Visit and Sleigh Ride

Your destination is Ylläs Husky Farm, there your husky guide will introduce you to the Alaskan and Siberian huskies. You will be given instruction on how to drive the husky sleigh, You will then take part in the 9km sleigh safari. Every participant gets a chance to steer the sleigh. After the trip there will be time to enjoy a coffee in a Lappish tepee with the guides who will be pleased to answer all your questions.

Day at a Reindeer farm

Your visit will take you to a Lappish country house in Torassieppu, Muonio. The home is over one and a half century’s old. It is one of the rare places that survived the Second World War. You will visit a museum of reindeer herding and farming. The housewife of the farm is the sixth generation, she will tell you about herding with slides and articles. You will also visit a reindeer corral and take part in a 3km reindeer sleigh ride. After this you will be served a soup lunch in a traditional Lappish hut. On the way back you will visit a reindeer meat shop.

The Old Woman of Kentänpää

The ancient Finns roamed the forests on wooden skis fashioned from birch and the Lapps sped across the snow in reindeer sleighs. On this trip you head for the fells on snowshoes, following the gullies carved by the melting Ice Age snow for about three kilometres up through the rugged scenery of Ylläs. This leisurely pace allows you time to observe the world around,, and with any luck, you may catch a glimpse of the ancient spirits of Lapland. You will stop for hot drinks around an open fire in a fell shelter.

Ylläs 718

We recommend this trip for people with a taste for speed and magnificent scenery. Heading first for Ylläsjärvi village along a snowmobile route, you then climb a good four hundred metres from Iso-Ylläs ski centre to the top of the fell in one exhilarating dash, before continuing down to Äkäslompolo where you stop for coffee in a log restaurant with time to admire the view.

Lainio Snow Village

Lainio is a small village in the middle of woods some 35km from Äkäslompolo. It was once famous for it’s Indians, but it is now well known for the huge snow castle and snow art tempting people from all over the world. Your snowmobile trip goes through the forest to Lainio and passes the mighty Ylläs fell on the return journey. In Lainio you will spend time viewing the snow sculptures and then having a soup lunch in the Lainio Inn.

Northern Lights

This safari takes you into the forest at night so you can try to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. You travel at quite a slow pace, which gives you a chance to see the forest at its most magical. After about 12km you will come to a clearing and take a break, sharing coffee, buns and Lapp legends around an open fire, watching the night sky to see if the Northern Lights will perform their magic. All too soon it will be time to return to the village.

Ice Fishing.

You will drive the snowmobiles to a wilderness lake, where you will be shown the art of ice fishing. In case you don’t manage to catch any fish there will be coffee and grill sausages cooked over an open fire in a traditional Lappish tepee. Duration 3 hours and about 3km on the snowmobiles.

Sami’s Reindeer farm You will be collected from the cabin and taken to Sami’s reindeer farm. You will be greeted by the family in traditional dress and Marjut will introduce you to the family. Marjut will explain what life is like on their reindeer farm, you will then be taken to the reindeer coral. Where you will be able to get up close to the reindeers and hand feed them. When you have finished it will be time for you to have your sleigh ride. You will be dashing through the woods in a traditional wooden sleigh pulled by some of Sami’s working reindeers. After this you will share coffee and homemade sweet bread around an open fire. You will also get a chance to visit Marjut’s arts and crafts studio which is in the old homestead. Duration approx 4 hours. Horse Trekking in the wonderland (www.lapinvaellushevoset.fi) After dressing warmly everyone will be allocated a horse for the tour. First you will be familiarised with the basics of riding an Icelandic horse, then you will have time to put it all into practice in the riding rink. After a short session you will be able to take the horses out into the forest.   Skiing We are able to pre-book either private family lessons or if you wish to be part of a larger group we can book you into the Ski School, also all your skiing and snowboarding equipment and lift passes can be pre-booked.   During the Summer, why not try these? Fly Fishing In Lapland Under The Mid-Night Sun Looking for somewhere different to go fly fishing, why not try Lapland. Our guide with his local knowledge will take you to some of the more remote fishing locations on the rivers and lakes, fishing for… midget trout, brown trout grayling and salmon. The Tornio-Muonio River forms the border between Finland and Sweden and is one of the major rivers in Europe, travelling some 2000 mile through Finland alone. It is also the longest free flowing salmon river in Europe, producing annually an average of half a million salmon smolts. Many fishermen come to fish for the large wild salmon, but the Muonio is an excellent source of grayling and large sea trout can be found in the lower river and some of the tributaries and brown trout are also present but fairly rare. The huge main river holds excellent stocks of grayling including many fish of specimen size, with an average size of approximately 35cm and about one pound. The Äkäs River has very good grayling and sea trout fishing. Trips arranged from as little as €110 per person per day, including guides, transportation to and from the cabin, licences and lunch. Overnight trips can also be arranged. Golfers Paradise The Levi golf course is set in a place of exceptional natural beauty by a lake at the foot of the surrounding fells. The spacious course with its variable terrain offers a challenging environment for golfers of all levels. What is unique about this course is that it allows you to play day and night, even under the midnight sun! The golf course is about 60km away from the cabin. The cost is approximately €50 per round. If you are a non golfing partner why not try the Spa hotel in Levi for a pampering session. Mountain Biking There is a 320km network of track winding its way through the forest that surrounds the village of Äkäslompolo. In the winter times these tracks are used for cross country skiing, but trust me these tracks are not flat! Or for those with even more leg power how about cycling up to the top of the Ylläs 718 fell, which is as its name indicates its 718 metres high. If you have time to stop for a breather the views are amazing and yes there is a café at the top. With the mid-night sun you can cycle all through the night without the need for lights.
