Sealion Island - The Lodge
Here you will find an insight into the unique experience that is Sea Lion Island Nature Reserve. You will discover how the sheer beauty and solitude of the island makes it a paradise for wildlife and visitors alike, and why both return year after year. Since 2009 Sealion Island has officially been declared a National Nature Reserve, with no introduced livestock living on the island. All fences have now been removed, enabling easier access to all parts of the island and it's native wildlife. Sea Lion Lodge is the only hotel on the island, so visitors are assured of their privacy and security wherever their daily adventures take them. This website will show you what makes Sea Lion Island the most spectacular place to visit and why staying at the Lodge is such a pleasure. Sea Lion Island lies 10 miles (16km) south of mainland East Falkland. The island is a relatively flat plateau with perpendicular cliffs of 80 ft (24m) towards the southern point, lower cliffs on the northern coast and a sandy isthmus linking a rocky bluff to the east with the main island. The island’s total area is 2,236 acres (905ha) and it is owned by the Falkland Islands Development Corporation. The Lodge is leased and run as a premier tourist destination by a private company. Sea Lion Lodge is the most Southerly Lodge Hotel in the world, which belies the fact that it is also one of the most luxurious places to stay in the Falkland Islands. The Lodge, purpose built in 1986, is managed by Jenny Luxton, Jenny along with her staff, ensure that their guests are superbly looked after throughout their stay. The lodge and settlement were completely upgraded during 2008. Guests can expect all the home comforts including: central heating in every room; ensuite shower, sink and WC in the two double rooms and the six twin rooms; and a shared shower, sink and WC for the five single rooms; all bathrooms have a shaver point. There are two spacious and comfortable living rooms, equipped with a television and a well stocked library of wildlife books. There is also a conservatory with chairs and tables, which is decorated with plants and flowers. The Pintail Lounge Bar offers an extensive range of wines, beers and spirits to enjoy after a wonderful day exploring the island. There is a guest computer with internet facilites and a CD burner for your images located in the Peregrine Lounge. WIFI hotspot cards are also available for purchase. Guests can also make use of our popular nine hole pitch and putt golf course. The Lodge offers spectacular views of the South Atlantic – there is nothing but water between Sea Lion Island and Antarctica. Sea Lion Lodge strives to be as environmentally friendly as possible, given its remote position. This has been achieved by the use of solar panels and the installation of wind turbines combined with a modern generator. Fortunately, Sea Lion Island is free from introduced predators such as cats, rats and mice which would otherwise threaten the many varieties of ground nesting birds on the island. The island has also been designated as a National Nature Reserve and as a Ramsar Site (The International Convention for the Protection of Wetlands, particularly as habitat for waterfowl). The Lodge is a member of the Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce and the Falkland Island Tourist Board. Booking: There is no minimum or maximum length of stay at Sea Lion Lodge – with the abundance of varied wildlife it is recommended that you give yourself the maximum length of stay available, local FIGAS flights and weather can always be an issue in the South Atlantic. We can offer packages that will give you 4 days on Sea Lion Island with 3 days in the capital, Stanley, where you can vsit the King Penguin colony at Volunteer Point. Sea Lion Island abounds with wildlife. Visitors to the island will encounter a wide range of species all within easy reach of the Lodge.
Beautiful plantations of tussac grass cover much of the island and provide a perfect habitat for elephant seals and sea lions. They are also alive with thrushes, finches, tussacbirds and Megallenic penguins. Elephant seals and sea lions can also be found on many of the island’s spectacular beaches.
Pods of orcas (killer whales) can be seen off shore as can leopard seals. Peale's dolphins are commonly seen here.
The island's southern giant petrels, with a wingspan of two metres, act as a welcoming party to ships as they approach Sea Lion Island. Rockhopper, gentoo and Magellanic penguins come to Sea Lion Island to breed. Macaroni and king penguins as well as Striated and Crested Caracaras are also common sights on the island.
The wetlands on the island support populations of Chiloë wigeon, speckled and silver teal and Patagonian crested duck, as well as wading birds such as the rufous-crested dotterel, two-banded plover and the white-rumped sandpiper, a non-breeding visitor from Arctic Canada.
Photography: The air is very clean which means on a clear day you can see for extraordinary distances, and sunrises and sunsets are magnificent.
When observing and photographing wild animals remember to respect their space – to keep from disturbing birds stay at least 20 feet (6 metres) away. However, if you are patient and quiet, inquisitive penguins will often come to investigate you. Other inquisitive birds include the striated caracaras, also known as ‘johnny rooks’, which are incurable thieves and have been known to fly off with anything from lens caps to entire cameras.
Life in the Falklands is dominated by the wind and the sea, so to protect your camera from sea spray and sand it would be wise to invest in a waterproof bag.
