QUIET AND LUSH IN ITS OWN ACRES OF TROPICAL GARDENS at the end of a palm-lined, private, gated driveway, Hale Pono is a brand new, eco-friendly garden retreat home. In a peaceful location off the beaten track, where tropical rainforest meets the jungle on its way down to the ocean.
HALE PONO ENJOYS A PLEASANT JUNGLE/RAINFOREST CLIMATE gently kissed by the trade winds - only 20 minutes from Hilo airport, closer to all the island has to offer! If you choose to fly into Kona Airport, you will have a spectacular 2 hour drive to Hale Pono with endless beautiful sights on your way home! Every island road is unique: passing desert, mountain, ocean, forests, lava-rock fields, rolling ranchlands, quaint towns and villages.
EASY ACCESS TO EVERYTHING ON THE BIG ISLAND - 25 minutes from Kilauea Volcano Park; 20 minutes from Hilo or Pahoa; 15 minutes to the ocean and great ocean hikes to hidden beaches; 30 minutes drive to surfing, taking a helicopter ride over the island, ancient petroglyphs, lava-walks and zip-lining over the waterfalls; 1 hour drive to South Point, Punalu'u and the green-sand beach; 90 minutes drive to Mauana Kea Observatory, Waipio Valley or The Parker Ranch; 2 hours drive to the West-Side of the island, Waimea or Kohala.
OR STAY HOME, TAKE HIKES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, RELAX in the house and gardens, stargaze at nights - choose to have grocery delivery, rideshares to town, or bus stops, massage sessions, healing sessions and breakfast/evening meal service. When you are ready, your 4x4 can be brought to you at Hale Pono to start your adventures. See website for details.

HALE PONO'S EXCELLENT OHANA MEALS SERVICE CAN PROVIDE you with home-cooked daily meals and/or a grocery shopping service of your choice of available local, regular, and international groceries!
IF YOU ARE RENTING A VEHICLE, WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO rent locally, and recommend to rent an AWD vehicle or 4x4 - it will give you far more flexibility for your island adventures; scaling the Mauna Kea summit, visiting Waipio Valley and some of the wilder beaches and beauty spots.
THE HOME IS SET ON A VERY BEAUTIFUL, TRANQUIL, BUMPY lava-rock trail - 0.5 of a mile to paved (tarmac) road in the ocean direction and 0.7 of a mile to paved (tarmac) road in the volcano direction, so your 4x4 will make the drive home easier, too.
SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY WE CAN ARRANGE FOR AN OLDER. local 4x4 (e.g., Toyota Forerunner) to meet you at the airport or at our home. Rates start at $250 per week, $60 per day. Please let us know in advance as the rental guy requires paperwork. An older 'island' vehicle makes you look like a local.
HARPERS RENTAL IN HILO RENT NEW 4X4s - WE'VE HAD GOOD rental experiences with them. The the bigger car rental companies rent soft-top jeeps which are great fun for island driving (be sure to book them well in advance).
A FLAT SCREEN TV, BLU-RAY DVD PLAYER ARE AVAILABLE and, usually, access to wireless internet and Netflix, although the last two are dependent on the local internet service being available and it is not always reliable. There is excellent 4G service in the area and most smart phones work to pick up wireless internet independent of the WiFi.
. LOCAL 4x4 RENTAL $250 P/ WEEK, $60 P/ DAY (subject to availability) . GROCERY DELIVERY $10 . OHANA MEALS - BREAKFAST $5, DINNER $15, DESSERTS $5
THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS TO DO AND EXPERIENCE ON the Big Island, guests often decide to stay for several weeks to enjoy the adventures and experiences. We encourage you enjoying our wonderful island - so Hale Pono's daily rates go down the longer you stay!

LATEST GUEST REVIEW Amy, Stayed November 2012 I'm not sure I can imagine a more perfect experience than the one we had staying at Hale Pono, just outside of Hilo. I can't say enough good things about this house, and Zoe, the owner. Where to begin? The house first (since that's probably what you're most interest in!). Whenever my family and I stay in a vacation rental, I drive my husband crazy with my "If this were my house. . . ." statements. I didn't have a single complaint about Hale Pono and the accommodations. Zoe has thought of everything. There are nice knives for cutting up the amazing Hawaiian fruit. There is ample silverware, glasses, plates, food storage containers, etc. There are beautiful linens on the bed, a good stock of games and DVDs in the hall closet, and shampoo and conditioner in the bathrooms. This was as close to staying in a well appointed hotel as it is possible to get in a private vacation rental, but with all of the room of a spacious and beautiful home! The location was perfect. The property is beautiful, with flowers (wild orchids!) everywhere. It is secluded and devoid of city noises, though nature's symphony plays all night long--quite possibly one of my favorite things about this house! We are an adventuring family, and the physical location was perfect for us as well. The house is closer to Hilo, but still close enough to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that we could easily go there for all or part of a day. In addition to the National Park, we also drove out to Akaka Falls as well as Kaimu Beach Park to hike over the lava beds to see active lava flows. On our return to Kona for our flight home we stopped at Punaluu black sand beach and South Point, both of which would make a lovely, but longer-distance day trip from Hale Pono. Finally, our interactions with Zoe, the owner of Hale Pono were most pleasant. She was helpful before our arrival and easy to communicate with. She was warm and welcoming upon our arrival and very solicitous of our needs. She's really the kind of person you feel comfortable with immediately and wish you could spend an afternoon chatting with. Without exception, our stay at Hale Pono was the single best experience our family has had staying at a vacation rental home. We will be back, and I would recommend this house to anyone! Thanks for the amazing stay!

...your heart will be warmed, you will belly-laugh...a lot, your tummy will be filled with yummy, healthy deliciousness, and you will sleep cozily well each night after venturing out to explore the island's magic. Quite simply, you'll never want to leave...." Kelly, from the US, Stayed January 2012
"We couldn't have wished for a warmer welcome...they've learned a huge amount about the Big Island and are prepared to help guests get to some great local places. In our short stay, we experienced the farmer's market, the volcano, a beach on the west side of the island, and surfing beaches on the east side" Kathryn & Roger, from NZ, stayed August 2012
"...how comfortable it was just to lie down on the sofa and listen to the sound of nature...I could really felt at home there. During 2 weeks of our stay, they kindly took us to many places, ocean, cave, volcano etc.."
