PROPERTY Description

Melrose Guesthouse in Ambleside is an elegant Victorian bed and breakfast (BandB) in the centre of Ambleside at the heart of the Lake District National Park. The Melrose is perfect for a weekend retreat, a mid-week break or a family holiday. Come and escape the pressures of modern living and relax and enjoy the stunning scenery around Ambleside, sample some of it's fine restaurants and blow those cobwebs away with a brisk walk in the fells.

The guest house is personally run by the owners, Alan and Lynn Salter, who will ensure your stay is a truly relaxing one. The guesthouse (BandB) is furnished to an excellent standard, as identified by its four star, silver rating by Visit Britain. In addition, we have the cyclists Welcome and the Walkers welcome certifications. There is full central heating to provide constant hot water and warmth after a day out on the fells.

If you are celebrating a special occasion, let us know if you would like us to arrange to have flowers, chocolates and wine orchampagne waiting in your room on arrival.

Guests are welcome to partake of the Langdale Spa facilities which are located near to Ambleside, in the Langdale Valley, and boasts a swimming pool, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and gym. Beauty treatments and massages can also be booked for a special relaxing treat. Passes are subject to availability (we have four that can be used at any one time).

All guests have a front door key, to come and go as they please. There is safe storage for bikes, hard standing for motorbikes, also drying facilities for outdoor clothing. We provide free flask refills- just ask after breakfast. We have an excellent selection of maps and books and are always ready to suggest nearby walks or mountain biking tours you may wish to try directly from Ambleside. If you would like a daily newspaper to read in the morning, please let us know your requirements, the night before. All rooms have WiFi coverage.

Rooms at Melrose Guest House, Ambleside

Melrose has 8 spacious bedrooms - The accommodation is spread over four floors. The top floor boasts our standard double ensuite (3) rooms, all of which have views to the local hills, either Loughrigg to the rear of the property, or Wansfell to the front. In addition we have an ideal ground floor double ensuite room for those who prefer not to venture up stairs. For those guests who have a blue badge, can park with no restrictions immediately outside the guesthouse. We have an Access statement available to send electronically, please let us know if this is of interest to you.

On the first floor there are two large triple rooms, each comprising a double bed and a single bed. These rooms are beautifully decorated and very spacious. They are suitable for small families, as a triple room or for twin occupancy. One of the triple rooms is ensuite, the other has private facilities and a rather grand Victorian fireplace - this is the red room. The ensuite triple room is known as our blue room. On the same floor there is also a recently refurbished single room, contemporarily decorated, with new stylish vanity unit in the bedroom and has its own new private shower room and brand new toilet facilities.

On the lower ground floor, there is a small suite of rooms comprising a single room, a double with extra single bed and a shower room/toilet, ideal for a family of four, or a group of three, with a bed apiece.

Each room is furnished tastefully and individually to suit the traditional nature of the guesthouse. All rooms have en-suite facilities or a private shower room, also digital colour television, with flat screen TVs some with DVD players (family, single and one of the triple rooms), hair dryers, alarm clocks, wine glasses, boot trays and complimentary refreshment trays, complete with tea, coffee, sugar, milk and biscuits. All rooms have WiFi coverage. There are also fresh towels and complimentary toiletries. We can arrange for flowers or wine to be placed in your room, prior to arrival for special anniversaries or surprises to complete that romantic getaway. Newspapers can be ordered each evening.

  • Other Attractions : A short walk from the centre of Ambleside, behind the Salutation Hotel, leads to Stock Ghyll Force, a spectacular 70 foot waterfall which may be viewed safely from a railed viewpoint. In spring the area under the trees is a carpet of daffodils.<br />
    Stock Ghyll, a tributary of the River Rothay, tumbles down through a series of waterfalls to the centre of Ambleside, passing under the famous Bridge House.<br />
    Once there were 12 watermills driven by the power of Stock Ghyll and other local becks, producing bobbins, processed fabrics, paper and ground corn. <br />
    Although the mills are long closed, and most have now been demolished or converted, the view from the main street opposite Bridge House gives some impression of those industrial times. The mill nearest the road is the Old Corn Mill, on a site occupied by a mill since 1335. This was the old manorial mill, rebuilt in 1680 by the Braithwaite family of Ambleside Hall. The building was restored in the 1970 s for use as shops.<br />
    The leaflet Town Trail - Ambleside Above Stock published by the Armitt Museum, describes a walk around the old area of the town, with information on the many old mills to be seen in this area.

About Melrose Guest House Ambleside The Melrose Guesthouse (Bed and Breakfast), in Ambleside is personally run by owners Lynn and Alan Salter. Since 2006, when they bought the property they have been dedicated to renovating and modernising the traditional lakeland slate property, built circa 1880. There is now a sense of old meets new, which provides a relaxing and calming feel. The house boasts many Victorian features such as the 'Red triple room' Victorian fireplace, which takes centre-stage and is marvelled by all. Front of the Melrose Guesthouse AmblesideIn September 2007, Melrose was announced as the winners of the Chairman s Trophy for the 2007 Cumbria in Bloom competition- Best Guesthouse. Come in the Summer and you will see the house looking its best, bedecked with beautiful hanging baskets and overflowing window tubs. In 2008, we were awarded with the Ambleside Horticultural Society (AHS)- highly commended for our window flower containers. In Oct 2009 we were awarded first place for our window conainers and also a discretionary award from the chairman of the Lakes Parish Council, again for the beauty of the baskets and containers. There is a wooden bench and patio table at the front of the house where you can relax amidst the flowers and watch the world go by. In July 2009 we achieved the much sought after 4 star silver award from Visit Britain. Ambleside is undoubtedly a beautiful place to live and visit. To ensure further generations also have the opportunity to enjoy it, we endeavor to play our part in conserving the natural resources by actively participating in sustainable tourism. We have an Environmental Policy in all the guest welcome folders, so you can see what we do and also the part you can play whilst staying with us. In October 2008, we achieved the accolade of a 'Bronze' Environmental Award from the Cumbria Business Environment Network and upgraded this in November 2009 to SILVER. Melrose is ideally situated in the centre of Ambleside. It is close to the Market place where the Ambleside bus stops, so ideal for guests travelling by public transport. We have off-road parking for motorbikes. Practically everywhere within the National Park can be reached within one hour's drive. Many fine scenic walks, both easy and more challenging, start from Ambleside, which is 1 mile from the head of Lake Windermere. Some of the locations seen in the recent MISS POTTER film, are within easy walking distance from the house, e.g. Loughrigg Tarn and Loughrigg Terrace.
