WAVE HOUSE ARTIST HOME Mal Pais, Puntarenas, Costa Rica
Mal Pais House Rental Photos and Description:
Designed by Artist, Resident of Costa Rica, 20 yrs holding on to this virgin sit
Candida's home, Mal Païs, in the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica - known for its surfing and protected nature preserves. Only two houses visible within miles of your 360 degree views from the pool!
The Wave House is a unique design that merges interior living with shaded exterior covered patios that dovetail with a protect existing jungle foliage. This setting, high-up overlooking Mal Pais beaches, allows for framed views of the sea and takes advantage of its orientation for both eastern sun and low setting sun, while not allowing direct sunlight to enter and warm the main house volume. As a holistic design, both in construction material and in orientation, the house is naturally cool in all seasons. It features immense sliding teak doors - over 20 feet in width - making the living volume one and integral to the outside spaces. At the Wave House the limits between inside and outside are thus blurred. The swimming pool has a unique trapezoidal shape on the South edge of the house and is experienced as an extension of the living area with a infinity edge facing the ocean.
Built on three levels with a curving roof profile - thus the name of the house - the ceiling heights reach over 18 feet inside allowing for hot air to remain in the upper volumes and cool air to remain in the living areas, close to the cool cast concrete floors spaced by flush teak wood strips. Built with steel that is clad in natural teak wood and reddish-brown plaster - the house is furnished with custom furniture built in Costa Rica, lighting fixtures and carpets made by local artists - the house assures a warm interior aesthetic, off-setting the brightness of the Costa Rican sun. This is an important design feature that also helps assure the calm and coolness of modern interior spaces.
The house is located within a pristine 15 acre site, undisturbed jungle, overlooking the surf beaches and cliffs on Pacific side of the Nego Peninsula, reached by ferry from San Jose. It is also possible to reach the Tambor area via small aircraft that links the peninsula to the San Jose airport. Access to the beach and the small town with a wide selection of stores, surf suppliers and the best restaurants of the peninsula, is a 5 minute descent on a paved road from the house. Thus you are both close to beach front activity and secluded in your own domaine.
In terms of space planning, the large curved roof volume is a single space with an open American Kitchen and a large full width balcony overlooking this living space.
All fixtures for the bathroom and kitchen are new - including dishwasher, large refrigerator, washing and drying machines - and sourced from Europe and the US. The table settings are all made locally in terra-cotta.
The house comprises two large bedrooms at the ground level; an immense open balcony level that sleeps three to six; and a separate studio on the lower level. There are three full bathrooms, one partially exterior and surrounded by tropical plantings, and an exterior shower. Nine people sleep comfortably without use of any pull-out couches, up to 12 people by using the large width of the upper balcony.
Completed in 2014 and designed by a French-PortoRican artist, the house is unique for the Island, taking cues from appropriate sustainable design features - natural cross ventilation, immense shading overhangs, large teak sliding doors to keep the heat out, and mineral floors, some painted by the artist herself - as well as local building traditions.
The Wave House is thus the perfect balance of contemporary living in one of the most pristine locations on our fragile planet, providing all the comfort for large families and friends, or for those needing a get-away from the bustle of San Jose or from where ever you are traveling from. Welcome to this special place!
Note: All linens are provided as well as cleaning services; a security guard who also maintains the pool lives just at the entrance to the property - a transplanted American with fluent Spanish - and can assist with any issues or needs, that may arise during your stay.
Interview with artist and owner of the Wave House in Mal Païs.
Q: What drew you to this site in Costa Rica?
CR: Well I had been coming to Costa Rica, specifically to the Nicoya Peninsula, for 20 years before deciding to build a home here. The Pacific side of the Peninsula, the 'end of the road' aspect of the site, sandwiched between the sea and the protected jungle of Cabo Blanco is what drew me to hills above Mal Pais originally. I was looking for an unspoiled piece of nature!
Q: What makes Mal Pais such a sought out destination today?
CR: I would say the exceptional white beaches and constant rolling waves, perfect for surfing and low depth of water for young children (I built the house when my own children were very young) were a perfect mix of unspoiled beauty and sports. From the Wave House site, I recall being taken by the beauty of large Pelicans diving into the sea, seen from afar, while surrounded by a jungle forest that I protect in how I wanted to house to be oriented for views of Mal Pais. Today this vibrant village has some of the best food offerings on the Peninsula, another reason to have settled here. Not far is also St.Theresa and smaller costal towns with a diverse offering of foods from all over, using the great fish and meat available close at hand.
Q: Why did you choose to build in the 'heights' above the village, rather than at the beach edge?
CR: For the incredible sunset views I see from the heights! The house is just a 5 minutes drive down a steep road to the the beach while affording 360 degree views - a visual delight that is not possible down at the seaside. Most importantly, having protected the original jungle forest surrounding my site, I have secured a secluded, safe and calm area, away from the bustle around the village. This location affords cool breezes that the house is designed around to catch, making the house comfortable even in the hottest season.
The combination of the above is what I needed to contemplate one of the last protected jungles on the planet and to find my own clarity for creating my art. It was also an ideal site to have large groups together, to stay or just for a evening get-together, and share this wonderful view, without obstructions from any adjacent houses and just minutes from the village itself. Having renovated 10 houses in my life across Europe, I knew exactly the features of a site that would make the Wave House a unique destination to draw me 'home' from my real home in Paris!
Q: You have Caribbean origins, mixed with a French mother and up-bringing. What else about yourself and the Nicoya Peninsula can you share with us?
CR: As an artist, raised in an artist family in Paris, I was attracted to the sustainable movement that took roots here, assuring that more than 60% of the land is protected. With the purest water on earth flowing out of its volcanic hills that recall the landscape of my families' native Limousin, I found a country without an army, and a gentle, outgoing population who loved children - what better qualities could I hope to find than those? I took many years to decide how to build, as the house is an 'art object' in itself, reflecting my own artistic sensibilities. I worked with so many wonderful local artisans for the house construction as well as the lighting and furnishings, that the house has become a collaborative layered work of fine details - like my art - that I am now ready to share it with others.
Q: The Wave House is one of a few major undertakings of yours. Could you briefly say a word on your other building or renovation projects?
CR: Yes, indeed - I would love to share with you my love of the Island of Corsica in the Mediterranean, where I have restored over a ten year period a 13th century convent and church into my own art studio and an arts residency program. I bought this rare property located in the North of the Island in ruins and spent a decade recreating a harmonious setting, while preserving the historic fabric of the existing buildings. The compound is now a registered landmark. It has also inspired me to create a line of cosmetics and perfumes, based on the native plants of the area - called Eau de Couvent. This project, like the Wave House, merges my artistic work, love of landscaped sites to protect and sustainable preservation into one long endeavor that has just come to fruition! I hope you can try Eau de Couvent some day or visit the 'Ile de Beauté'. www.sanfrancescu.com

Land was purchased twenty years ago when I first began visiting the small villages of Santa Teresa and Malpais and there was nothing but jungle around me! So, I finally built this house for me as a art studio - as I am an artist based in Paris and Corsica, 1/2 US, 1/2 Caribbean parentage -just in the last two years. The houses reflects my artistic sensibilities and desire to be at one with nature and disturb as little as possible to this virgin jungle.
